Literacy and Cross Curricular Connections
Children’s Literature
The Read to Me icon introduces an opportunity to read a children’s book as a way of building problem-solving skills or illustrating how a math concept can be applied in the real world. Children’s books also provide an effective way to address NCTM Mathematical Problem-Solving Standards since many popular stories teach flexibility in solving problems and provide students with an opportunity to reflect upon the usefulness of mathematical thinking in everyday life. The Teachers Resource Manual references and summarizes more than 200 trade books that are used to introduce or extend the lesson.
Cross Curricular Connections
Connections to nature, real-world information, music, art, and physical education allow students to see math everywhere in the real world.
