Success Using Math Standards - SUMS

Moving with Math® SUMS is a targeted high school intervention for students who need to master essential prerequisite math concepts for success in Algebra and beyond. SUMS provides the structured, hands-on Concrete-Representational-Abstract (CRA) instruction students need to build confidence and stay on track for graduation.

The program identifies knowledge gaps and uses concrete manipulatives and scaffolded instruction that respects the maturity level of high school learners. SUMS is designed for intervention classes, credit recovery programs, alternative education settings, and any environment where high school students need to close critical math gaps to succeed in algebra or graduate.

Organized Learning System Empowers Teachers

SUMS uses the Moving with Math® Learning System to provide teachers with an organized and systematic process to raise achievement for all students. It is easy to use and streamlines classroom management, integrating standards-aligned assessments to direct data-driven, differentiated instruction, giving teachers more time to focus on the engaging CRA lessons proven to improve student understanding and academic performance.

Universal Screening

The program uses Pre and Post-Test assessments taken online or paper/pencil that quickly identify students’ needs and direct objective-based instruction for individual students and the class.

Summative progress monitoring is integrated into the Learning System to support continuous data-driven instruction and ensure student understanding.

Research-Based Hands-On Instruction

Explicit CRA instruction begins every lesson with hands-on manipulatives to help students understand and make sense of math concepts. Research shows CRA instruction is effective and enables students to physically explore, discover, and communicate essential math concepts while developing problem-solving skills every day.

Lesson Plans Provide Daily Professional Development and Promote Teaching Excellence

Comprehensive, lightly scripted lesson plans integrate proven instructional strategies based education research to guide hands-on manipulative activities for every concept, ensuring access for all learners.

Lesson plans save prep time, help teachers lead engaging hands-on activities, differentiate instruction, monitor progress and set students up for success.

Math Games

Games

Games utilizing a variety of manipulatives give students a fun way to reinforce understanding, establish fluency, build vocabulary and language skills, and foster community with peers.

Continuous Progress Monitoring

Daily Reviews assess progress and identify reteaching needs. They also support long-term retention by continuously spiraling and reviewing previously learned objectives. In addition to integrated summative assessments, lesson plans include a variety of formative assessment options to monitor fluency and gather evidence of mastery of objectives.
