Moving with Math® Math By Topic is a comprehensive intervention curriculum that covers essential math standards and is especially effective for Special Education and Multilingual learners. This evidence-based curriculum covers essential math standards for Grades 1 through 8+ and is purposefully designed to remove learning and language barriers from mathematical instruction.
Every student activity book features a lower reading level, increased white space and page layouts to make the curriculum accessible for all students. Organized into four levels, with 3 to 5 topics per level, this approach lets teachers target specific skill gaps or deliver comprehensive grade-level intervention.

Aligned with NCTM, CCSS and State Standards.

Accessible by design, Math By Topic makes abstract concepts tangible through the proven Concrete-Representational-Abstract (CRA) instructional model and hands-on manipulatives which have been described as the “Universal Language” of math. The program has been proven effective with diverse learners in districts across the country in special education, multilingual or dual-language environments. This program ensures that every student can access rigorous math content regardless of reading level or language proficiency.
Math By Topic Program Features

Organized Learning System Empowers Teachers
Math By Topic uses the Moving with Math® Learning System to provide teachers with an organized and systematic process to raise achievement for all students. It is easy to use and streamlines classroom management, integrating standards-aligned assessments to direct data-driven, differentiated instruction, giving teachers more time to focus on the engaging CRA lessons proven to improve student understanding and academic performance.
Universal Screening
The program uses Pre and Post-Test assessments taken online or paper/pencil that quickly identify students’ needs and direct objective-based instruction for individual students and the class. Data can also develop tailored individual IEP-driven instruction and develop measurable annual goals for students with IEPs.
Summative progress monitoring is integrated into the Learning System to support continuous data-driven instruction and ensure student understanding including Benchmark Tests online.

Research-Based CRA Instruction
Explicit CRA instruction begins every lesson with hands-on manipulatives to help children understand and make sense of math concepts. Research shows CRA instruction is effective and well-suited for young minds, enabling them to physically explore, discover, and communicate essential math concepts while developing problem-solving skills every day.
Lesson Plans Provide Daily Professional Development and Promote Teaching Excellence
Comprehensive, lightly scripted lesson plans integrate proven instructional strategies to guide hands-on manipulative activities for every concept, ensuring access for all learners and incorporates the Council for Exceptional Children’s High-Leverage Practices in Special Education for students with disabilities.
Math By Topic lesson plans reduce prep time, help teachers lead engaging hands-on activities, differentiate instruction, monitor progress and set students up for success.

“The mathematical background of the teacher is the number one in classroom predictor of student success.”
Effects of Teachers’ Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching on Student Achievement - 2005

Integrates Literacy and Language Acquisition
Read to Me activities in many of the lesson plans creatively weave children’s stories into the curriculum to build vocabulary, connect math to the real world and make it fun.
Oral language skills are strengthened through small-group activities that enhance comprehension and apply math in real-world contexts, fostering curiosity and reducing anxiety for students.
Games
Nothing lights up a child’s face like telling them it’s time to play a game. Games utilizing a variety of manipulatives give students a fun way to reinforce understanding, establish fluency, build vocabulary and language skills, and foster community with peers.

Continuous Progress Monitoring
Daily Reviews and Check Points assess progress and identify reteaching needs. They also support long-term retention by continuously spiraling and reviewing previously learned objectives. Integrated assessments make it easy to track growth and guide data-driven instruction for IEP goal monitoring.
In addition to integrated summative assessments, lesson plans include a variety of formative assessment options to monitor fluency and gather evidence of mastery of objectives.
Family Engagement
Family Math Connections booklets, available in English and Spanish, provide an important link between school and home, sharing students’ academic progress with parents and guardians. Booklets include activities that encourage family members to participate in their child’s math development and support them as they discover a road to success.

What our customers are saying
I figured we would get results, but even I was shocked by the growth! Our 8th-grade students had a net 30% increase in diagnostic assessment scores in only one trimester. Math By Topic targeted intervention strategies are effectively addressing skill gaps and accelerating learning for the majority of participants.
