Moving with Algebra Builds a Gateway to Algebra Success

Algebra has always been considered one of the “Gatekeepers” in math. Recent studies have found that enhancing teacher skills and leveraging high-quality curricula with data-drive instruction are building a “Gateway” to Algebra that leads to improved outcomes for all students.

Moving with Algebra is a standards-based program that starts with foundational prerequisite skills critical to success in Algebra and scaffolds through objectives to be mastered in an Algebra class. Whether students are under prepared for Algebra, learning English, or need a different instructional approach, the program provides access and gives students a gateway to Algebra success. Using this flexible and unique system, all students can become successful in Algebra no matter their level of preparedness, learning styles or spoken languages.

Research-Based Hands-On Instruction

This innovative curriculum features research-based Concrete-Representational-Abstract (CRA) instruction giving teachers and students unique hands-on concrete manipulative activities to build genuine conceptual understanding of variables, equations, functions, and abstract concepts in Algebra.

Lessons are carefully scaffolded to blend explicit instruction with inquiry-based strategies so students of all learning styles and languages develop conceptual understanding. Students build foundational knowledge and confidence as they use manipulatives to explore, discover and communicate mathematical patterns crucial for success in Algebra.

The Moving with Math® Learning System integrates this innovative curriculum with standards-based assessments to enable data-driven CRA instruction with progress monitoring and outstanding instructional support, giving teachers all the tools to lead successful and effective Algebra instruction.

Universal Screening

Pre-Test assessments taken online or paper/pencil quickly identify students’ specific needs and direct objective-based instruction for individual students and the class.

Comprehensive Lesson Plans Set Teachers and Students up for Success

Detailed lesson plan structure and evidence-based strategies support teachers in leading explicit CRA instruction. Lesson plans reduce prep time, help teachers facilitate engaging hands-on activities, differentiate instruction, monitor progress, and set students up for success.

Continuous Progress Monitoring Ensures Success

Continuous progress monitoring is not just a tracking tool, it is the engine that drives algebra intervention success. Progress Monitoring consistently measures where every student is, how fast they are growing, and where they still need support. It ensures that students spend every day, with purposeful, targeted, data-driven instruction to move them forward.

Moving with Algebra is arranged in three parts using hands-on manipulative activities to teach Number Sense through Quadratic Equations and Polynomials.

Part A prepares students for Algebra by providing instruction in the fundamental concepts of and operations with fractions, decimals and percents.

Moving with Algebra manipulatives
scaffold instruction and modeling

Part B provides scaffolded instruction in proportional reasoning, writing and simplifying algebraic expressions and equations and solving equations and inequalities. It also includes modeling with tables, graphs and equations.

Part C introduces linear functions including slope and intercept formulas. Students write, graph and solve exponential and quadratic functions. They solve systems of equations and inequalities and operate with polynomials.

Open the Gateway to Algebra Success

Don’t let Algebra be the roadblock that holds your students back. Moving with Algebra can be the breakthrough that opens doors to their future. Our proven program gives students the foundational understanding and confidence they need to succeed in Algebra and beyond.

I found it, I found it . . . yes all the way in Texas“ was Dr. Kristen Wilkins phone call from CEC in San Antonio to colleagues back in Isle of Wight, Virginia. A chance meeting at the Moving with Math booth had her so excited that she had finally found the curriculum that they had been searching for to support Tier 3 students from Kindergarten all the way through pre-Algebra and Algebra 1. “We have been searching and searching for a research-based program that was appropriate as our students with disabilities grew, but most intervention programs didn’t go past 8th grade.”

Assessments aligned to standards generate instant reports to help teachers create IEPs and easily differentiate instruction. Teachers and administrators have immediate access to individual student and classroom achievement results. Reports identify knowledge gaps and assist teachers in planning one-on-one, small groups and whole class instruction.

Professional Development Promotes Excellence

The most powerful factor in student math success is the teacher in the room. Our professional development training and workshops equip educators with the research-based strategies, hands-on tools, and deep CRA instructional knowledge they need to confidently help every student succeed.
