Bringing Math to Life Through Children’s Stories
Math is Everywhere
Moving with Math® weaves children’s literature into carefully developed lessons using the Read to Me feature to connect the concrete, hands-on learning and the real world where math lives every day. Pairing research-based CRA instruction with the natural engagement of storytelling, students build problem-solving skills, develop mathematical vocabulary, and discover that math is not just something that happens in a classroom, but is woven into the world around them every single day.

What is Read to Me?
The Read to Me icon in many of the Moving with Math elementary and middle school lessons introduces an opportunity to read a children’s book as a way of building problem-solving skills or illustrating how a math concept can be applied in the real world. It is an effective way to address NCTM Mathematical Problem-Solving Standards since many popular stories teach flexibility in solving problems and provide students with an opportunity to reflect upon the usefulness of mathematical thinking in everyday life.
Connections That Make Math Meaningful
Literature Kits give teachers a library of stories connected directly to the math concepts being taught at every grade level. Whether a teacher is introducing fractions, exploring measurement, or building number sense, there is a children’s book recommendation ready to bring that concept to life in a way that resonates with all leaners.

Literature and Math Belong Together
When students encounter concepts through multiple modalities and in multiple contexts, they understand more deeply and retain more effectively. Pairing math instruction with children’s literature engages auditory and visual learners, builds mathematical vocabulary in a natural and meaningful context, supports language development for ELs and creates an emotional connection to math.
The connection between literacy and math is a proven pathway to deeper understanding, stronger vocabulary, and more confident learners.
