To multiply by 2 and 5. PD Materials: Paper, crayons, tape Vocabulary: multiplication, times sign ( ), product, factors Read to Me: Arctic Fives Arrive, Pinczes, Elinor J. (See re vity on foreword p. xiii.) Adding Pairs of Shoes Introduce multiplication by 2 by having students put together pairs of shoes. Name 9 students, ask each one to write his or her name on a sheet of paper, and then have each student work with a partner to place a pair of shoes on the paper and outline them. Hold up a paper as you ask, How many shoes are on this paper? (2) Tape the paper to the board. Name a second student, again asking, How many shoes are on the paper? How many shoes do these 2 students have in all? (4) Repeat until you have counted the outlined shoes of 9 students. How many students have shoes on these sheets of paper? (9) How many shoes in all? (18) How did you get your answer? Students might count the shoes one by one or skip count by twos. Write on the board: Here is another way to show the same problem. How many shoes are on each sheet of paper? (2) How many students put 2 shoes on a paper? (9) How many shoes in all? (18) Write on the board: 2 9 18 product This is a story about a “2” and a “9” that become 18. We are using a special kind of addition. What is special about this addition? (We put the same number together over and over.) The sign that means putting together groups of the same size is called the times sign or the multiplication sign. Write a multiplication sign in the problem on the board. We are putting together 2 shoes 9 times. The answer in a multiplication problem is called the product. The numbers being multiplied are called factors. Counting Groups of Five Each student should have crayons and paper. Repeat the activity by having each student outline 1 hand. Hold up 1 picture and tape it on the wall. How many fingers on this hand? (5) Hold up another picture and tape it to the wall. How many fingers on this hand? (5) How many hands on the wall? (2) How many fingers in all? (10) Repeat until 4 pictures of 5 hands are mounted on the wall. Write an addition sentence and a multiplication sentence about this problem. What does multiplication mean? (multiplication means putting together groups of the same size) Read through the example at the top of the page. Work problem 1 together, then have students finish the page independently. Think of the pictures of shoes or hands to answer the questions. Discuss problems 4 and 5. When you multiply a number by 1, the answer is the same as the number being multiplied. When you multiply by 0, the answer is always 0. Journal Prompt Multiplication is a shortcut for addition. Use words, diagrams, and/or pictures to explain if you agree or disagree with this statement.
