Problem Solving: Find the Pattern Name fractions, identify similarities and differences using Fraction Strips and relating Fraction Strips to number lines 38 Level C Daily Review 39 Objective: To name fractions from Fraction Strips. To identify similarities and differences among Fraction Strips. To relate Fraction Strips to number lines. Materials: Fraction Strips (Master 14) Vocabulary: similarities, differences, pattern Discover the Pattern: Fraction Similarities and Differences Distribute a set of Fraction Strips to each group of 2 to 5 students. Each fraction strip in this set represents one whole or one unit such as one whole cracker or one whole brownie. Look through your set of Fraction Strips with your group. Discuss in what ways your strips are all alike and in what ways they are different. Record your findings in a table with two columns headed SIMILARITIES and DIFFERENCES. After 10 minutes, ask volunteers from each group to suggest the similarities and differences they have found. SIMILARITIES DIFFERENCES same shape colors same size divided into different number of parts congruent the number of shaded parts differs same width and length number of strips of any one color same area and perimeter same thickness same weight same material *all divided into parts of equal size *It is very important that the last similarity, i.e., each strip is divided into parts of equal size, be verbalized since this is the essential concept of a fraction. Naming and Identifying Fraction Strips The following three activities will assess the student’s ability to translate from a concrete model to a written or spoken name. (1) Display a fraction strip. Ask a volunteer to name the shaded part of each strip. To encourage students to visualize the number of parts the whole is divided into, ask three questions: How many parts has the whole been divided into? How many parts are shaded? What fractional part is shaded? (2) Write a fraction on the board, e.g., 3/4. Ask students to find a strip to match the fraction and draw a picture of the fraction. Repeat with other strips. (3) Say a fraction name aloud, e.g. seven twelfths. Ask students to find a strip to match the fraction or draw a picture of the fraction. Repeat with other fraction names. This page provides opportunities for students to generalize how three fractions are alike according to some attribute. Illustrate the first problem with Fraction Strips. Have students work in pairs or on their own to solve the problems Answer Key 1. divided into 2 parts 2. exactly 1 part shaded, fractions close to zero 3. all parts shaded 4. one half shaded 5. one third shaded 6. three fourths shaded 7. less than one half shaded 8. all but one part shaded, fractions close to 1 - What’s My Secret? With a partner or small group, students take turns selecting a subset of Fraction Strips that are alike in one way. Others in the group try to guess the secret. Demonstrate an example by showing all the strips of one color and have students guess the secret of the sorting. Other ways the students will sort by: everything shaded, nothing shaded, one part shaded, equivalent parts shaded, and so on.
