48 Number LineAddition Objective 26: To teach the thinkingpatternof countingupby 1, 2, or 3on anumber line. PD Materials: Interlocking cubes, Number Stair, 10-sideddice, Number Line (Master 2) Background The three stages studentsmove through in learning facts are: 1. Understanding the concept. 2. Using strategies to assist fact recall. 3. Drilling for immediate recall. In the first stage, students act out a problem, draw a picture, use amanipulative, anddescribe the action of addition as combining or putting things together. In the second stage theyuse thinking strategies to find the sumsmentally. Countingupby 1, 2, or 3 is a helpful strategy to use to remembermany of the basic addition facts. Counting from aNumber This activityhelps students visualize adding 1, 2, or 3 to anumber by counting forward from a number on aNumber Stair or on anumber line. Studentsworking in small groupswill need a Number Stair 1 to 10, interlocking cubes, and a number line. Touch each tower as you count up from 1 to10. (1, 2, 3,… 10). Now touch the 3 tower and count up from3 to10. (4, 5, 6,… 10). Repeat counting to 10 startingwithother numbers. Touch the 3 tower. Count up2 steps from 3 and say “stop” after your landingpoint number. (4, 5, stop) Write on the board: 3 and 2 steps = 5 3+ 2= 5 Repeatwithother examples. Ifwe turn the 10 tower, it becomes amodel of anumber line from0 to10. Showhow touse your number line to add3+2. (Touch 3on the number line.Move finger twomarks to the right.) What does additionmean? (Addition means puttingnumbers together.) Use cubes todemonstrate the example at the top of the page. Build the first number (6) and add three cubes to count to 9. Thenhelp students learn tousementalmath insteadof cubes to solve the same problem. Thinkof the largernumber andput it in your head. Count up3 from that number. What is your landingpoint? (9) Repeatwithother examples. OneMoreBingoGame Each student prepares a game card bywriting the digits 1–9 in any space in eachof the nine boxes in aTicTac Toe grid. Example: Students take turns tossing a 10-sideddie and covering onemore than the number shownon the die. Aplayer throwing a 3 covers the digit 4. Aplayer throwing a 9 loses a turn. The first player to cover 3numbers in a row–horizontally, vertically or diagonally–is thewinner.
