Place a trainof 10 cubes along the edge of the strip.Write a “0”under the left endof your strip. Startingwith thenumber 1, writeoneof the numbers between1 and10under eachmark along the strip. Demonstrate. The completednumber line should look like the picture at the topof the student activity page. What are some things younotice about our number line? (It starts at 0 and ends at 10. There aremarks on the number line. All themarks have the same amount of space between them.) Count forward as you touch the cubes and say the numbers from1 to10. Count backward as you touch and say eachnumber from10 to1. Repeat as you ask students to touch themarks on the number line. Explain that the the topof the page shows a picture of a trainof 10 cubes placed above anumber line as students did in the IntroductoryActivity. Read the first problem together. Point to the number 4on the picture at the topof the page. What number comes after 4? (5) Ring thenumber 5. Work the problemon the right together.Have students complete the page on their own.
