PD Materials: Interlocking cubes, Number Stairs Vocabulary: numberwords Towers of OneMore Each student or small group shouldhave interlocking cubes and aNumber Stair. Demonstrate each step as youwatch a student in each group follow your instructions. Todaywe are going tobuild towerswithour cubes.Wewill use a special pattern tobuild the towers. First, build a tower 1 story (1 cube) high. Now, build anew tower by following this pattern: match your old tower andmake yournew tower 1 cubeor 1 storyhigher. Watch studentsmatch 1 and add 1more cube tomake a tower of 2. Nowbuild another tower bymatching your last tower andmaking yournew tower 1 storyhigher. Continue in the samewayuntil towers up to 10 stories are built. Whatwas the special patternwe used tomake eachnew tower? (Match the old tower andmake the new tower 1 cube higher) Arrange your towerswith the shortest tower on the left and the tallest tower on the right. Touch your shortest tower and say thenumber of cubes or stories. (1) Continueuntil all towers havebeen counted. (2, 3, 4,… 10) Display aNumber Stair. This is aNumber Stair. It helps us see thepatternusedwhen counting numbers. Put each towerunder the correct number on theNumber Stair. Iwill count thenumbers out loud and touch each tower.
