GradeK 37 AdditionSymbols: PlusSignand Equal Sign Objective K-26: To introduce the plus sign and equal sign. Materials: Teddy bear counters (orMaster 12), Teddy Bear Storyboard (Master 9), Numeral Cards, “+” and “=” cards, (Masters 3–6), crayons, Master 10, interlocking cubes Vocabulary: addition, plus sign (+), equal (=), number sentence Introducing thePlusSign andEqual Sign Have children retell and thenmodel the following story using teddy bear counters on Teddy Bear Storyboards. There were 4 teddy bears playing in the sandbox. One more teddy bear joined them. Howmany teddy bears are in the sandbox? Ask children to tell you the numbers they heard in this story as youwrite each number on the board: 4 1 5. This is a story about 4 bears, 1 bear, and 5 bears. What was the action in the story? (The bears came together in the sandbox.) We call the operation or process of joining things together “addition.”We use a special sign to show that the objects or numbers have been added. We use the plus sign. Write a big plus sign on the board. Have studentsmake a plus sign by crossing the index finger of each hand. Have a volunteer come to the board to draw the plus sign. What numbers were joined? (4 and 1) Place the plus sign between the 4 and the 1. What does the 5 represent? (the number in all or the number you get when you add 4 and 1) Because 4 and 1 or 4 plus 1 has the same value as 5, we say it is “equal to” 5. Write the equal sign between the 1 and the 5 and say the number sentence aloudwith the class, four plus one equals five. This is a number sentence. This number sentence has 2 numbers, a plus sign and an equal sign. Give each pair of students or small group a set of Numeral Cards, a “+” card, and a “=” card. Tell a new sandbox story. This time have students select theNumeral Cards, “+” card, and “=” card to form a number sentence. For example: There are 3 bears in the sandbox. Twomore bears come to play. Howmany bears are now in the sandbox? 3 + 2 = 5 What does “adding” or “addition” mean? (Additionmeans putting numbers together or joining numbers.) This page involves sums to 6. Have volunteers tell a story for each picture. Ask howmany bears in all should be drawn in the sandbox. Notice that these problems require the child to visualize the number of bears being added and then draw a picture of the number in all. Note: a circlemay be drawn for each bear. Have children fill in the plus and equal sign for each number sentence. AdditionFactsPractice Give each child an addition fact card from Master 10 and have themmake up a story and model the problem. Journal Prompt Use teddy bear counters to tell a story that shows addition. Draw a picture of the story. Use + and= towrite the story.
