PD Materials: Interlocking cubes, Numeral Cards 1–10 (Masters 3–5), crayons Read toMe: Ten Flashing Fireflies, Sturges, Philemon. (See page xiii of foreword for the related activity.) Towers of OneMore:Readiness for Addition Today we are going to build towers with our cubes. We will use a special pattern to build the towers. First build a tower 1 story or 1 cube high. Now, build a new tower by following this pattern: match your old tower andmake your new tower 1 story more. Continue in this way until 10 towers have been made. Pause and allow time for the children to complete each tower. What is the pattern for making each new number? (match the old tower andmake the new tower one storymore) Be sure to emphasize the 2 steps in the pattern. Arrange your towers in a line with the shortest tower on the left and the tallest tower on the right. Touch your shortest tower and say aloud the number of stories in it. (one) Touch the next tower and say the number of stories. (two),… touch the next tower and say the number of stories. (ten) What was the special pattern we used to make each new tower? (match the old tower andmake the new tower one storymore or higher.) Count aloud withme as you look at and touch each tower: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten. Have students save their towers for the student book activity. What is the important pattern used tomake the counting numbers? (Each counting number is 1more than the last counting number.) Place your towers on the matching picture. Color the pictures of cubes the same color as the cubes in your tower. Write the number of stories in each tower inside the circle above each tower. Be sure to draw attention to the number word alongwith the numeral for each tower. Refer students to amatching picture on the inside front cover of the student book. BuildaStaircaseof Towers Each pair or small groupwill need 55 interlocking cubes and 2 sets of Numeral Cards 1–10. Shuffle the cards and place them face down between the two players. Players take turns selecting a card and building a tower tomatch the number selected. Refer students to the towers printed on the inside front cover of the student book for this game. After each play, the card is returned to the bottom of the deck. The object of the game is to build the towers from 1 to 10 and put them in order on the pictures. The first player to complete the staircase is thewinner. If a card is selected for a tower the child has already built, the child loses that turn. All Aboard!
